Cope
is now called Hospice
Prince Edward!
In
November, 2000, the Prince Edward Palliative
Care Association and COPE joined together to
become Hospice Prince Edward. COPE was formed
in 1989 by Mark Davis and the Palliative Care
Association was formed in 1996 by Dr. Graham
Burke. Hospice continues to be a non-profit,
non-denominational charitable organization whose
purpose is to help people suffering from life
threatening illness and their caregivers and
families to live well and to help bereaved people
of all ages cope with the death of a loved one.
The Hospice Prince Edward office is located
at the Picton Hospital, Room 260. Telephone:
(613)-476-2181 ext.4253.
Volunteers
Hospice volunteers are dedicated people who
have taken special training programs to prepare
them to assist people who are suffering a life
threatening illness, their caregivers and their
families who are grieving. Our volunteers provide
direct support, group leadership, office and
administrative support and fund raising support.
Public
Education
Hospice Prince Edward is also able to provide a speaker
for your organization on topics related to living
with dying, death, grief and recovery.
Resource
Centre
Hospice has a lending library of resource books, audio
tapes, video tapes, pamphlets and articles. Anyone
is welcome to come by the office to borrow these materials.
Support
Groups
All support groups are organized and implemented by
trained facilitators. A caregiver support group is
available for people who are caring for others facing
a life threatening illness. The group provides a safe
place to share difficulties, joy and pain, to give
and receive encouragement, and to celebrate victories.
A grief support group is offered as needed. This group
meets weekly for eight weeks. "Rainbows" is a new program that deals with children who have or who will have to face the death of a loved one or other grief related issues. This program is offered in a school setting with trained facilitators including one educated in Child and Youth work and Early
Childhood Education.
Funding
Hospice is partially funded by the Ministry
of Health Long-Term Care, the United Way, the
Ontario Trillium Foundation, memorial donations,
community direct mail comapigns and through
fundraising activities.
GriefNet
GriefNet.org is an internet community of persons
dealing with grief, death, and major loss. They
have 47 e-mail support groups and two web sites.
Their integrated approach to on-line grief support
provides help to people working through loss

site, KIDSAID, provides a safe environment for
kids and their parents to find information and
ask questions.
Fernside
Fernside, founded in 1986 in Cincinnati, Ohio,
is a non-profit, non-denominational organization
serving grieving children and their families.
At Fernside, they know that the grieving child
has the capacity to rebuild, so they gently
encourage sharing of stories, feelings and memories
with trusted friends, honoring each one's search
for a new beginning.
